Taxi Stand
The other day, my girlfriend and I were waiting in line for a taxi in Greenhills. A taxi arrived, dropped off a passenger and is supposed to go to the taxi stand to pick up awaiting passengers. Guess what happened? Some wise guy hailed the cab before it gets to the taxi stand. The security guard noticed this and told the passenger to get in line. Wise guy angrily answers back (didn’t hear what he said but he was shouting so I assume he’s angry) and rides off with the cab. I was pissed. I don’t think I have to spell out what’s wrong with that picture. Discipline has always been a problem with us, Filipinos. When we see long lines, we try to look for people we know who can get us in faster. When applying for driver’s license, IDs, and clearances, we use fixers. We cross roads right under an overpass and in front of a sign that says “BAWAL TUMAWID MAY NAMATAY NA DITO.” We bribe our officers just to get away with a driving violation while justifying it by saying “hassle pa mabigyan ng tiket.“ I could go on and on with examples. We see it, experience it, and do it everyday. Has it come to a point where we don’t understand laws, rules and regulations? Or do we just dismiss them as mere suggestions or guidelines?
